In all things God looks at ones heart. Have no Other Gods. Love the Lord your God with all your heart all your mind and all your soun, and love your neighbor as yourself we can get bogged down on what and what isn't sin. Do you serve money or does money serve you. does your participation in poker lead others toward or away from God. As people we can rationalise things to suit ourselves only we know in our heart wether some things are a sin or not, and if i am in doubt then i say i am. I like to have a beer with mates but i will not drink with someone whom i know has a problem and does not have victory in this area, Paul says to be careful not to cause a brother to stumble. I myself do not judge others hearts on this matter, i like poker, but I Love GOD.

Also, not to be the guy who craps on poker but if you really want to search yourself whether poker is right or wrong consider this....Poker is often considered a sinful activity due to its close relationship with gambling. The Bible instructs us to keep ourselves from the love of money (1 Timothy 6:10; Hebrews 13:5). The Word of God also teaches us to stay away from attempts to "get rich quick" (Proverbs 13:11; 23:5; Ecclesiastes 5:10).

Is poker gambling? OR is it a skill game with odds just like any other risk?

I noticed everyone seems to have the same type of justification when it comes to poker. I too like to play online poker and agree that poker can be manageable. It's not the action of playing but the motive of why one is playing. But let me ask this question??? As a believer of God's Word, is it worth dabbling with huge temptations of greed which is sin to play a game. Also Proverbs 1:19 talks about those who are greedy of gain.... so why do most of us play poker?

I am so glad to find another believer who is an avid poker player. I didn't get much of a response from Kid Poker when I tried to discuss faith with him. Drop me a line, I'd like to discuss this more with you!!

Thanks to everyone chiming in. I don't think poker in and of itself is a sin, but it is an area of risk for me that can lead to sin (similar to fairnbalncd's thoughts). willwonka's comments are quite poignant. Think of how much time I play, compare that to the time Muslims spend in prayer, compare that to the time I spend in prayer. During our worship service last Sunday, the minister quoted this from Martin Luther: I pray an hour every day, except when I get very busy. Then I pray two hours a day. I can't imagine any relationship that would survive the rather one-sided relationship I have with my Father, yet His grace sustains me all the time. Thanks for all these thoughts, and keep chiming in.

Wonderful, deep questions that every poker player should be asking themselves. Great stuff. I struggle with many of the same moral dilemmas with my poker play, but I do make a point of having the poker "out in the open" in my close personal relationships.
