Ticket prices for the All Star Game at Yankee Stadium: $150-725 (up from $75-285 last year). Gouge away, guys. I won’t be watching.

A New Spring?

It’s an anxious yet exciting time for me, this end of April. I’m pretty sure I won’t be returning to the WSOP in a major writing capacity (you can find all of my poker articles and previous coverage here). There are still a couple of things that might take me to the Rio in the coming weeks; regardless, it will be a summer of sleeping at night rather than spending every waking hour walking amidst grinders hoping for their big score.

It damaged me on several different levels, my time there. It derailed my business, a huge block of time and energy that I’ve struggled to overcome since. It hurt some personal relationships with folks who I admire. It frustrated me, working feverishly with little to show for it.

The part I really enjoyed was working with people who were better than me at something I was learning, as well as helping others who were striving to hone their newly-found craft. Otis has always been the class of those at the WSOP the two years I was there, able to relate to everyone there with respect and professionalism. Amy won’t be back, but she was the rock star that I cautiously introduced myself to in ‘06 then got to work with in ‘07. Pauly was always encouraging me, taking the time to care about what I was doing when what I was doing wasn’t that relevant. Johnny kept me hopping and legitimized my vision of how we could do something different in the clutter that is poker coverage. Carmen was a breath of fresh air for me, and I’m so proud that she’s continued to sprint forward since last summer. She brightened my evenings when she would come in and we would chat about some angle that she could pursue. Of course, it was a bit of the blind leading the blind as I didn’t really know how to do whatever I was giving her direction on, but neither of us cared too much. Linda was able to keep me pumped up and going with encouragement and the late dinner.

Gene and Dan were great roommates to have last summer (OK, who am I kidding? I’m not actually sure if Dan lived with us!). I’ll miss the late night nachos with Gene and the easy conversations about all things life and nothingness. It was the first time in a very long time that I had a buddy who I hung out with yet didn’t spend every waking hour with. I liked it.

All of that said, poker coverage in general has some significant flaws. Due to Harrah’s inability to figure out a way to handle chip counts electronically in a cost-effective way, the PokerNews gang has to relie on manual counts as non-intrusively as possible. Due to Harrah’s inability to figure out a way to identify players, mystery men and women appear atop Day 2 leader boards magically, out of thin air.

The restrictions on live coverage and access is a complicated kettle of fish, something that other sports and competitions are confronting as well. The caste system created isn’t that big a deal, not unusual in any business setting with multiple companies present. The significant issue is that the limits of access, necessitated by the physical constraints that come with poker tables and players and small spaces, simply diminishes the quality of coverage and the perspective given to the the audience. Why is there an audience for ESPN, SI, Fox Sports, national news coverage, network sports, and niche media at events like the Masters, the Kentucky Derby, the Daytona 500, and March Madness? It’s because different media provide different coverage, different views and perspectives, and develop different stories.

The single biggest problem in poker media, in my opinion, is the lack of differentiation in what each outlet is trying to provide to the audience. Bluff/PokerNews has paid to provide hand-for-hand coverage and chip counts, yet other outlets dutifully try to out-do them. I don’t know of any other competition where one media outlet provides the facts of the competition nor where those facts are so difficult to capture. As they should, Bluff/PokerNews works hard to collect as many big hands and chip counts as possible. But the complexity that is a poker tournament is still difficult to nail down, so many moving parts, players surging up the leaderboard only to crash down later.

Bluff/PokerNews now has many more tournaments under their belt, and the fact collection should be the best to date. Will the coverage be the best to date from the media outlets there? It just depends on what the readers really want. CardPlayer seems to have significantly increased the quantity of players tracked and reported on during their WPT events, raising the bar and giving vital facts to friends and followers of many more players that the masses haven’t heard of.

ESPN, the biggest gorilla in the room, has done little to expand on their coverage over the last few years, aside from going to HD filming and showing more events. I really wish they would take a lead from the Masters coverage this year, where DirectTV showed five or six Masters channels (showing Amen Corner on one channel, as an example). There is absolutely an audience for more in-depth coverage, yet ESPN continues with their now formulaic presentation of big hands and their tired Poker Acts (e.g., Hellmuth et al), combined with “The Nuts” and human interest stories sprinkled in.

My most interesting experiment last year was when I spent 3-5 hours watching one player at one table. It was a dramatically different way to watch a tournament when you followed Nam Le at the beginning of a tournament, Jason Strasser during Day 2, Michael Binger down to three tables, Dario Minieri deep in the Main Event. Was it great coverage? I don’t really know, but it was something unique and different. I felt like I got more of a glimpse into how different players played at different times under different table situations. You started to get a sense of the poker that we’ve come to know and love online, being able to see people change gears, to have a VP$IP of 12% or 60%.

Actually, what I’ll miss most are the players. I’ll miss seeing a smile from a player who knows or recognizes me, like Cyndy or Ben Roberts. I’ll miss the people I got to know well, people like John Armbrust, Doug Kim, Jason, and Doug Carli. But I’ll really miss my buddies who were there making their run, like sprstoner, LJ, lucko, Fuel, Drizz, and the countless others.

Maybe I’ll sneak into one or two tournaments again this year and make my own run, get my first WSOP cash. Or maybe there is a new path for me this summer, one of normalcy and of excitement about the future and of looking for errant drives and of swimming with the boys.

EW’s Idolatry: Better than American Idol

Idolatry is truly laugh out loud at times when they do the recap videos. By far, it’s better than watching Idol. btw, the only way to watch Idol is to fast forward through all of the commercials, through any song that you hate, and through any judges’ comments.

Hilarious diatribe as they rant (above) after Carly gets voted out with her terrific performance then Brooke skates through after she forgot her words, hit rewind, and started again (below).

Can’t wait to fast forward through tonight; oh, scratch that. Can’t wait to delete it from my TiVo.

Hot Poker Link: Top Pots at PokerListings

I met some of the PokerListings folks last year at the WSOP. Very nice group, and I’ve stumbled upon a neat feature to their website that you should bookmark. It is called the MarketPulse, where they show the biggest pots each day, week, month, and YTD (primarily on FullTilt, as that is really the home of nose-bleed poker).

Steroids in MLB: Should We Be Over It?

I found an old email that I’d written to a journalist at the Atlanta Journal Constitution, with his response (see below). It was written a year ago, before the Mitchell Report and all of its aftermath. Is this behind us, should fans simply return to their ballparks and TV screens? And should we reward Commissioner Bud Selig by putting more cash in the coffers of MLB owners? I say no.

————————————————————-

Thank you for your article on Bud Selig. I probably have a slightly different take on the matter. Major League Baseball hid behind the Players Union as an excuse not to regulate their league for steroids. During the 90’s, other sports were aggressively attacking this intervention into competitiveness. Fringe sports like Track and Field and Swimming were the most aggressive as the manipulation of the human body directly impacted results. Just ask Angel Myers Martino or Ben Johnson. I agree with you that Selig has always been a charlatan. Whether he and MLB willingly decided the benefits of players on steroids outweighed the impact on the integrity of the game isn’t that important to me. Selig managed the league from 1992 until now, and I firmly believe all results and records should stand as they are recorded. Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, Palmeiro: all of these players played the game based on the rules and testing in the game at the time. The whole idea of interviewing players ten-fifteen years after the fact to determine whether they took steroids is preposterous. Even beyond the financial well-being of baseball, the Commissioner should be the steward and protector of the integrity of the game. Selig was there throughout, and he has approved of the results of baseball by his existence and inaction for the last fifteen years.

I would also suggest that baseball writers have no business jumping in after the fact to whine about steroid abuse in the 90’s, unless they were too young and weren’t covering baseball at the time. Why Bonds and not Ripken? Why Palmeiro and not Jeter? Why Sosa and not Chipper Jones? Because they look like they were on steroids? Because where there is smoke there’s fire? I am a layperson when it comes to steroids, but in my mind we only need to look at Track and Field and Swimming to see the level of sophistication that abusers have gone through to beat the next test. Without real-time testing, then every single player is legitimate yet every single player is suspect.

I’m afraid that the baseball media collectively seem to be a cross between Aretha Franklin and the camel with its head in the sand, the diva that they so despise in players yet ready to bury their journalistic intuitiveness in darkness of ignorance. I do agree with you that Selig should show real leadership and passionately follow Bonds, but I also feel that he should step forward and do the following:

  • Take responsibility for the probably steroid abuse rampant throughout baseball in the 1985-2004 (give or take a few years)
  • Declare that no players who played during that time will be judged any more after the fact
  • State that every box score documented during this time period accurately reflects the performance of all players during this tiime

All of this was the greatest blight on the game of baseball since the Black Sox scandal and the segregation of MLB, and the top man has to be held accountable.

(from the AJC writer)

Craig … Thanks for the comments. Because the baseball union has always been the most powerful of the pro athlete unions, it was always going to be an obstacle for MLB to get drug-testing. In fact, the union only started to cave after Congress got involved — that’s for all of the people who said Congress should worry about other things. That said, yes, the owners should have pushed harder. … I also agree that the media should take a hit for this, and many of us have articulated that on the air waves and in print the last few years. But it’s a fine line. The media gets criticized all of the time for throwing out accusations and things that aren’t true or can’t be proved. But now the media gets criticized for not writing more about steroids when, in fact, it would’ve been difficult, if not impossible, to have any evidence in a story. As for who has been the media whipping boys in all of this, it’s pretty obvious why: Bonds is approaching the HR record, Sosa and McGwire assaulted the single-season record, Palmeiro was VERY high profile in his denial of ever using steroids before Congress, etc. I have never heard steroid accusations regarding Jeter, Ripken or Chipper. Trust me, it’s not like any of us are covering for them.

(AJC writer today)
Craig, my thoughts haven’t really changed on the subject, although to be honest with you I’ve hardly thought about Bonds or baseball and steroids lately. I think testing will continue to get tougher, but so will ways to evade it. I don’t think sports will ever be clean. But there has been some measure of progress. The true judgement on people like Bonds and others will come with Hall of Fame voters. It’s already happened with McGwire.

=====================
I’ve left the writer anonymous as I never had an intention to put his email here. I’m not sure how appropriate it is to email a journalist as simply a reader then publish the response, so I’ll leave the anonymity. So, is all of this still much ado about nothing by me?

Fathering
To My First Born

My eldest is missing his soccer game this Saturday (gasp!) to go on a 6th grade church retreat for the weekend. We were asked to write an encouraging note to our children. Here is mine.

Some people think that a father’s job is to discipline children so that they don’t act up and get in trouble. Others believe the job is to protect them from all the bad people and circumstances in the world; that way, nothing bad can happen.

It’s a lot more complicated than that, and you’re just starting to see it. The job is really one where you try to equip your child with values and skills while creating an environment that gives them the best chance to be a terrific adult. Values and skills are two very different things indeed. Skills are abilities that you either have or can foster and grow, things like studying, playing a sport or instrument, and even being someone’s friend. Values are the beliefs that guide everything you do, from the very big decisions you make in your life to the quick choices that you make a dozen times a day.

It would be easier if parents could simply decide everything for their child, kind of like you were setting up a new character in a video game where you could determine everything they would become, everything they would believe. God didn’t make any of us that way; he gave us free choice. He designed you and me to decide a zillion things every day, from irrelevant things like what we’ll wear and eat to huge things like if we believe in Him, if we love Him, if we will follow His will in our lives.

As you know, I am a Christian, accepting Jesus as my savior when I was nine or ten, about when you did. My own faith has grown and changed over the last 30 years since I was twelve. It’s been difficult for me at times; sometimes I wasn’t cool (OK, almost all the time!), sometimes I was left out of things, sometimes people made fun of me. When your Mom and I were first married, we worked with high school students in Princeton, New Jersey as advisors at our church. They were so different than the kids I’d grown up with; super-smart, but most of them questioned everything and didn’t believe much of anything. We realized that just saying, “God loves you, Jesus died for you, and that’s all true because the Bible says so and I say so,” isn’t good enough.

God didn’t make robots, and you aren’t a robot. It’s OK to have questions about your faith. It’s OK if you hear something from someone and have questions about it or don’t agree with it. All of that is what it means to move from a child in Christ to a Christian. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13:11 “When I was a child, I used to speak as a child, think as a child, reason as a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.“ God designed all Christians to not understand everything about Him and about how to live for him; that’s what it means when he says when he was a child, he acted like a child.

Becoming a man means to become smarter about God and also to start doing the things that God wants us to do in our lives. Sometimes, I ask God to show me what He wants me to do with the big decisions of my life. In Jesus, He showed us how we should live each day: to pray and speak to God, to love others and show them compassion, to do things and serve others, to read the Bible and learn through talking about it, and to understand the only way we can come to Jesus. That way? Not doing things, but simply admitting to Him that I sin and do wrong things every day, that I am really not good enough for God to love me, yet He not only loves me He allowed His Son to die so that I could have all these sins that I commit to be erased and forgotten.

God doesn’t ask you to be the perfect Christian or the best Christian. No, He simply asks you and me this question: I love you, do you love me? If yes, show me.

A Humble SNG Victory

I’ve had trouble sleeping the last two nights, with too much brainpower being spent on work and business-future stuff. After another late night of work, I played two SNG’s on PokerStars (one Step 2 using FPP points and one $20 NLHE SNG). I took down the cash one and finished 4th in the Step 2 (giving me a Step 2 ticket).

I don’t know if this is of interest at all, but here are the 153 hands. I played tight throughout, took the lead early, was comfortably ahead until we were down to four players, when it became a dog fight after a shortie shoved my 77 raise with Q-10 (Hand #75). I got bumped to the short stack on the next hand, got lucky with a 7-6 short shove, then scrapped and clawed to get into the money. 63 four-handed hands later, we were in the money. I had the chip lead after the next-to-last four-handed hand, identical hands (Q-10) that hit on the queen on the flop got all the money in, and I hit a backdoor flush to cripple the bubble boy (Hand #118). I was pretty patient three-handed, waiting to snap-call a guy when he re-raised my button raise (I had Ad-6c). HU lasted one hand (my AA vs KK), and that was that.

Tourney stats from PokerStars:

153 hands played and saw flop:
- 11 times out of 35 while in small blind (31%)
- 11 times out of 35 while in big blind (31%)
- 10 times out of 83 in other positions (12%)
- a total of 32 times out of 153 (21%)

Pots won at showdown - 9 out of 14 (64%)
Pots won without showdown - 37

I haven’t played SNG’s in awhile, and it was a nice change of pace (although these games have really tightened up a great deal, even these low stakes). I’m interested if any regular SNG-ers feel the same or have other observations. I could show you the others I’ve played recently that lasted a dozen hands (open shove ahead of me, I pick up 10-10? I call–oh, queens…), but what fun would that be?
